About Harlan Ferments

Harlan Ferments is video content of the successes and failures about fermentation at home: apples, soda, cider, and generally anything else that suits my fancy. This website holds the notes that go with those videos, so the details still have a place to live after the video ends.

About Harlan James

Illustrated portrait of Harlan James, with gray hair tied back and a beard, in a black T-shirt.

I wrote my first program on punch cards, back when "debugging" meant dropping the stack and spending the afternoon putting it back in order. After a long career in software development, I've officially retired. That mostly means I fix my own bugs now instead of other people's.

I'm old enough to remember when a computer filled a room, but young enough at heart to still fire up my Harley every chance I get. These days I'm learning new skills and picking up hobbies faster than my knees would like. Harlan Ferments is one of them, and the best one so far.

This little venture helps stretch the retirement checks, and I'm having a blast doing it. Turns out fermentation is a lot like coding: you set things up just right, wait, and hope nothing explodes.
